Thank You to All My Supporters
Nathalie Dupree for US Senate
100 Queen Street
Charleston, SC 29401
November 1, 2010
All of my life I have wanted a voice - to speak truth to power and take action when I see a grievous political wrong rather than complaining and saying how awful something is, rather than doing anything when frustrated by political mendacity, egotism, arrogance, and lack of leadership.
This time I did something. I found my voice and decided to do something outrageous: run for the United States Senate, not as a strident, tear-it-down candidate, but asking for more for South Carolina: for thoughtful representation rather than obstructionism and extremism. Amazingly, you supported me.
We raised enough money in less than five weeks to travel around the state of South Carolina, talking about what a good Senator should do. I've been able to address Senator DeMint's disdain for the people of South Carolina while pointing out the need for two senators actually representing the needs of our state. We ran ads; we had articles in the New York Times, Washington Post, daily newspapers including Sumter, Columbia, Greenville, Aiken, Orangeburg, TV stations in Greenville, Columbia, Spartanburg, Charleston, the SCETV Radio and South Carolina Radio Network, and more. Ads in the Post and Courier in Charleston, Times and Democrat in Orangeburg, Morning News in Florence, and The Item in Sumter, and almost all the weekly newspapers in the state. I became the only write-in Senate candidate in the U.S. endorsed by the National Organization for Women (NOW), and the Charleston City Paper endorsed us.
But without you out there, without your phone calls and letters, checks slipped under the door and in the mail, donations coming in through the web site, and all the "You go, girl" notes on Face Book and emails, I couldn't finish this with the feeling of gratefulness I have. It includes a personal sense of pride in doing rather than grousing. It is feeling grateful that our actions have reflected the desire of many, many people who believe in the need to expose the utter failure of Jim DeMint to act on behalf of the needs of South Carolina, but rather demonstrate a self-promoting agenda coupled with gaining national attention as the misleader who wants to lead.
Next time can be your time. Meanwhile, thank you - for everything - money, support, organization, enthusiasm and prayers. And it is with gratitude I hope that now one of you will decide to take a leap next. With you and me--us, all of us--what cannot be started? And with all of us acting to express what we think is right, what is it we cannot do with specific constructive action? I thank you for reminding me of this, for enabling me to find my voice, and for all so many have done for me. Go team - we can do anything!
